Today I Wired A Plug

So my mum wanted the cable shortened on her radio so I volunteered to use my GCSE Physics experience (so it wasn't all useless after all) to complete the task on her behalf! Armed only with a pack of useless screwdrivers and a pair of extraordinarily heavy wire clippers, I set to work!

First I unscrewed the plug and removed the cable and didn't lose any of the screws!

Then I had a quick practice with the wire cutters on the end of the cable.

Then I cut the cable to the desired length, cut off a section of the outer cover of the cable and cut off sections of the covers of the inner cable using the heavy, unwieldy tools provided by my jealous stepdad as part of his feeble plot to foil my righteous act of Manliness, all within the time it took my mum and stepdad to decide to get dinner from the fish and chip shop!

Then I put the stripped cables back into the plug, remembering:
  • the BLue cable goes in the Bottom Left 'cus it's BLue
  • And the BRown cable goes in the Bottom Right because it's BRown!
There was not a third cable in this plug, but if there had been it would have gone in the top, because it is neither blue NOR brown!

Then I screwed them in place!

Then I screwed the plug back together!

Then I placed the plug into the socket and put on the radio!

Not only does this make me extremely awesome but also massively boosts my sex appeal. When word gets out about this the ladiez'll be queuing up just to bask in awe of my extraordinary sexiness!

I am now a MAN! You may no longer refer to me as Splat and instead refer to me as MAN!

You were taught a mnemonic for it? They made us remember it as is. Get it right or I put another turn into your thumby, eh?. Top marks in that class, I tell you.

You do know that it doesn't matter where you put them, since the power grid works on AC, right? As long as you don't put it in the grounding one, of course.

EDIT: However since the UK is backwards as usual and have fuses in their plugs (the hell?) I suppose there's more logic to it in this case. In any other case it wouldn't matter.

...as long as you remember which way you're holding the plug. I never learnt any mnemonics, so I generally just take note of the arrangement when I pull it apart.

Anyone else think that wiring stuff is such a big pain in the arse? Especially light switches and plug sockets, and getting those damned stiff 3-core wires into tiny holes at the right length without too much insulation being taken off. (insert sexual-related joke referring to putting stiff things in tiny holes here, I currently lack the wit) It's such a fiddly job even with the right tools.

We have circuit-breakers in our circuitry too, and often the plug fuses prevent entire power supplies being tripped when an appliance fails. They're an extra safety feature, and I'm surprised it's not normal to have this in other countries. When I took my PC over to Germany (for an extended 6 month stay) complete with a power strip that I converted, people were looking at the UK plugs and wishing that they had them there instead. (And as a side note, German plugs are a pain to wire)

Hey, you're the one who used the phrase 'pain in the arse'...

I don't know how they do things in Australia, mate, but here our plugs have three prongs, one at the top and two below, so it's not difficult to work out which way it goes.
I also took note of which way they were round when I opened it, however. Just in case.

This is true. Like the time I incorrectly wired a...

Note: that was humour.

So you actually learn practical, useful stuff during Physics? We had none of this, sadly.

Everything in physics is useful and practical. The trick is knowing to apply it.

Actually that was the only blatantly useful thing we used in Physics. But knowing how to apply levers and how circuits work and [insert wittily placed useless Physics snippet here] are of course applicable in their own ways.

I actually meant whether you're facing it from the front or back; is it the bottom-left wire or the bottom-left prong?

Well you remove the back and look down into the plug. So you're seeing the prongs from behind. Bottom left wire.
