ALGEBRA IS SATAN'S SUBJECT!

Posted 06-07-2008 at 08:32 AM by Moosh da Outlaw
Its almost the end of the year. I only have five days of school left. And guess what my math teacher gives us? A packet full of algebra and other mathmatical oddities.

INCLUDING BOX AND WHISKER PLOTS.

Who the hell came up with them anyway? They're complicated, ugly, and are completely USELESS. I mean, who in the right mind would go "You know what? I have a freakishly huge amount of data. I wonder what I should do with it. I know! I'll make a box and whisker plot!"

Never in my young life have I seen anybody use a box and whisker plot outside of school. They're pointless! If you have a bunch of numbers, why bother to take the time to make a butt-ugly graph displaying all of it? Why not just tell us the goddamn numbers?

What does it all mean?! I can't read a single thing on this graph! D=

I've never been a fan of math, and i've never been good at it either, but I respect graphs/equasions that actually MEAN SOMETHING and don't just WASTE SPACE!

Stem and leaf plots are a different matter entirely. >>

My brain exploded just looking at that graph.

Box and whisker plots aren't algebra. They're statistics.

Yeh, but the class is called algebra, which is partly the reason I hate we're still learning how to make the damn things.

So why are you doing a graph with mulitcoloured syringes on it?

Okay. What I don't get about the American edumacation system is why you don't split the diff and just call the class 'Mathematics'.

Is this what people learn in whatever class you go in? If it's seventh then fuck, I better start going on wikipedia for explanations and get a custom made calculator! If it's below then fuck, you guys learn alot! If it's over then fuck, I better grab my teacher by the neck and scream in his face that I don't want to learn that crap!

I'm 14. We've been making these things since 3rd grade and I still have no idea what the hell they're supposed to mean.
And I think they added colors to distract from the fact they're so damn UGLY.

At least you haven't spent all week revising a completely retarded amount of information, all for one exam where you shall be required to know roughly a twelfth of it in super great detail.

Actually, I think what Laser said merely proves how fucked up his school system is and how much more competent yours is by comparison. With the possible exception that they've failed to teach you what the plots actually mean.

But at least you've heard of them.

I found box and whisker plots to be quite handy simplifications of large data sets. They’re very simple to devise, construct, and interpret, and are especially handy when you don’t want lots and lots of overlying curves, which impede their own clarity through clutter.

That said, in several years of doing casual non‐academic statistics I’ve never found a use for them, nor have I encountered them in any school work above GCSEs (and that includes Statistics 1 at A-Level, but not Statistics 2).

To conclude, they are easy and simple. The real problem with that graph is that it is very poorly labelled, providing no context or self‐explanation. Assuming (wrongly, given the title of the graph) that it’s a measure of the texture of different commercial apricot breeds, I would be tempted to grow specimen 456 because it has the narrowest range of textures, therefore offering the greatest efficiency in providing fruits of the quality expected by the sellers I supply.

I hate apricots in meals. They are a food for desserts, not mains!
