A friend's death.

A few weeks ago. I found out a mate of mine had been found dead in his house. This was the guy who was online with me and my friends almost every night... I spoke to him only a day before.

Needless to say. Me and my mates were shocked. Some more than others. That might sound odd, but the reason why I knew him in the first place was because he was a housemate of my 2 close friends when they started uni. He was asked to join our little gaming community and he started playing with us. So my other mates were closer to him. Personally. I didn't know him all that well honestly, I only spoke to him online but we got on.

He was a genuine guy. He made me laugh so many times and was a real treat to be around. He bought something to our group. And now it's gone. And it's fucking depressing.

Probably wondering why I'm only bringing this up now. Well today was his funeral. I sadly couldn't make it. But I did learn something.

He committed suicide...

This guy was almost finished with uni. His life ahead of him. He was going to be a programmer. He was pretty chill and never seemed sad or angry. It just doesn't make any fucking sense.

I never actually met him face to face. It kills me to know that I never will either...

Fucking. sucks.

Damn, I'm sorry for your loss, man. Even speaking as someone who is familiar with mental illnesses and suicide, I still feel like I never have the right words to share.

It's a fucking shock and the major reason for that is that people who hurt that badly inside and who are preoccupied with suicidal ideation can be really fucking clever about hiding it. That said, mental illnesses come in so many shades, colors, varieties, degrees, etc. It can persist for months, or years, or even a lifetime.

Hopefully, you'll get some closure, though, if he really was that good at keeping his turmoil a secret, you might not. What you can do, though, is support your mates. And I don't just mean about your lost friend, talk about one another and stuff.

A mutual friend of my dearest friend and myself killed himself a few years back. We had always been frank with one another, but when the news had come to light, we made a promise to keep no secrets from each other.

Life can be really fucking hard, but it's always worse when you go it alone.

Some people hide depression really well. Some can't. Sorry to hear about your friend.
