I've heard from my mates (Who are at uni) that Unity is out of date in many areas and takes a optimizations for the games to work properly.

All those shitty slender clones have given the engine such a bad name. Unity isn't inherently bad. People always forget it can be used to make some fantastic games such as Superhot and Ori and the Blind Forest.
I thought JAW did do a pretty decent job recreating Oddysee within it. Sure the ragdolls were pointless and it was pretty buggy. But they made a good basis to work on for SoulStorm I think.
Fun Fact: New 'N' Tasty was going to have it's own engine before they scrapped it. The AbeHD Pre-alpha was rendered in that Engine.
They literally started all over again and switched to Unity. I think this was due to a limited budget.
